A forgotten exercise and if it is done is never done like a manual labor.
In gyms people will put a barbell across their shoulder and do a few reps
the bar is balanced thin and the few reps do not mimic the way a laborer
works.
Now when you throw something unstable on your shoulder and step up
and down for a 100 or more reps with out dropping the bag you will be tested.
I love the heavy bag tough to handle, gets tough to hold as time goes on which
makes your body work harder just to keep it on your shoulder.
This type of training builds a strength that is usable in all areas of life, a functionally
strength that is tough and will test the mind and body.
I did 300 step ups shouldering a 80lb heavy bag using a 15″ bench never
dropping the bag to rest. Sounds easy and all gym rats will tell you it
would be easy, try it and then tell me that.
This type of training will build an incredible amount of “Conditioned Strength”
the type laborers like a furniture mover would use walking furniture and boxes
up and down steps all day long.
So many people do the stuff that looks more appealing like sledge hammer
training which is tough and so is shoveling but carrying, shouldering and dragging
are brutal workouts.
Try grappling with someone that has built a strength like this they become almost
immovable.
Step ups with a decent amount of weight for high reps are a killer!
Toughness Builds Winners
Johnny Grube
Johnny,
Did it take you some time before you got to this level of conditioned strength?
This is def a workout that few people will want to do -I, myself, will be doing them.
Builds tremendous physical and mental strength.
